[149]맥나마라 회고록-베트남의 비극과 교훈 In Retrospect

 

다찌바나 다카시가 책에서 베트남 전쟁에 대해 재미있게 쓴 책은 압도적으로 이 책이라고 해서 읽어봐야겠다는 생각을 하게 되었습니다. 하지만 <맥나마라 회고록>이라는 책으로 번역된 것이 없었고 도서관에도 물론 한글본이 없었습니다. 그래서 어쩔 수 없이 구글에서 ebook으로 구매했습니다. 비록 영어로 읽어야 하지만 구글에서는 한글본과 비교가 안될 정도의 다양한 분야의 책을 손쉽게 ebook으로 구매해 읽을 수 있습니다. 

어린 시절 고향에 큰집 아저씨가 계셨습니다. 월남전에 참전하셨다고 들었습니다. 성격도 좋으시고 늘 웃으시며 잘 대해주셨는데 어느 날 암진단을 받고 돌아가셨습니다. 고엽제 후유증이었습니다. 

 

베트남 전쟁이 일어나기 전 저자의 삶에 대해 설명합니다. 포드가문에 의해 포드자동차의 중역을 맡게 되었지만 케네디 대통령 당선자에 의해 국방장관으로 임명됩니다. 국방장관으로 임명되어 미국 백악관 주변에서 어떻게 업무가 이뤄지는지 자신이 경험했던 일들을 바탕으로 자세히 설명합니다. 미국이란 나라가 2차 세계대전의 승전국으로서 세계의 수퍼파워로서 쿠바사태, 베트남을 포함한 동남아의 공산주의 확대 우려, 유럽에서의 역할 등 고려해야할 사항이 많아 국방장관이 자녀들의 학교활동에 참가할 여력조차 없고 진지하게 한 가지에 대해 고민하기가 쉽지 않다는 것도 알게 됩니다. 

 

 케네디 대통령이 남베트남에서 일어나는 상황에 대해 파악하던 중 암살당하게 되고 후임으로 존슨 대통령이 취임합니다. 성격이 많이 다른 존슨하에서도 맥나마라는 국방장관으로서 역할을 합니다. 

 북베트남의 공산주의가 남베트남을 점령하게 되면 동남아 전체로 확대되는 것을 우려한 미국은 남베트남의 동태에 기민하게 반응하고 있었습니다. 그러던 중 드디어 전쟁의 도화선이 시작됩니다. 긴박하게 돌아가는 상황이 실제 주역의 입장에서 자세히 펼쳐집니다. 흥미진진하게 베트남 전쟁의 막후 이야기를 알 수 있는 좋은 책입니다. 

 

책의 뒷부분에는 이 회고록을 두고 긍정적인 기사와 부정적인 기사평을 함께 담아 객관성을 기하고자 한 노력이 보입니다. 

 

우리가 교과서나 다른 매체를 통해 베트남 전쟁을 간접적으로 접하게 되면 그 매체를 만든 사람이나 집단의 시각으로 전쟁을 보게 되고 우리도 거기에 동조해서 판단하게 됩니다. 이러한 위험을 줄이기 위해 다양한 정보를 통한 신중한 판단이 필요합니다. 이번에 읽게 된 <In Retrospect>는 한국어로 번역되지 않은 것(제가 못 찾았을 수도 있습니다)이 아쉽지만 많은 분들이 읽고 안타까운 전쟁이 다시는 일어나지 않아야 한다는 것을 공감했으면 좋겠습니다. 전쟁을 두둔하는 군산복합체와 관련이 있는 사람들은 당시 핵전쟁까지도 불사하려했다는 점은 돈 앞에서 물불을 가리지 않는 무서움도 보여줍니다. 어느 나라나 그런 집단이 있습니다. 전쟁이 있어야 존재감을 과시할 수 있는 사람들이죠.
