was the author of many acclaimed books for children and adults, including the Crosswicks Journals. Other books in the Time Quintet are <A Wrinkle in the Door>, <A Swiftly Tilting Planet>, <Many Waters>, and <An Acceptable Time>. She wrote several books featuring the Austin family, most notably the Newbery Honor Book <A Ring of Endless Light>.

미국에서 청소년 권장도서를 조회하던 중 유명한 책이어서 아이들을 위해 구매했습니다. 만화라서 아이들이 부담없이 읽었지요. 2018년에는 디즈니 영화로도 만들어졌더군요. 연말 연휴기간을 이용해 읽었습니다. 생각보다 시간이 좀 걸렸습니다. 소설을 읽는 장점은 나만의 상상력을 발휘해서 등장인물들과 배경을 설정한다는 점입니다. 이 책은 만화여서 그 특권이 조금은 퇴색되었지만 그래도 영화보다는 상상력을 발휘하며 읽었습니다.
1962년에 출간된 책으로 아인슈타인의 E=MC2와 같은 이론의 영향을 받은 작가가 상상력을 발휘해서 물리학자인 아버지를 찾아 시간여행을 하는 스토리를 만들었습니다. 요즘과 같이 스마트폰과 같이 아이들의 주의를 빼앗아갈 것들이 없고 기껏해야 TV나 라디오가 미국 가정에 있었겠지요. 아이들이 놀이를 만들고 부모들의 이야기를 듣고 자라며 자신의 이야기의 꽃의 씨앗을 가꿔갔을 것입니다. 과거로 돌아가자는 것은 아니지만 과거에 비해 풍족해진 면에 비해서 아이들이 감각적인 것에 둘러싸여 있어 자신만의 감각을 예민하게 만들 시간이 부족하지 않을까 우려가 됩니다.
<멋진 신세계>에서 사람들을 태어날 때부터 계급을 나누고 두려움이 없는 사회를 만들었듯이 이 책에도 IT가 지배하는 사회가 잠깐 나타납니다. 안전하고 행복해 보이는 사회지만 어딘가 획일적이고 불안한 사회지요. 결국 IT로부터 아버지를 구하고 남동생 찰스 월리스를 구하는 주인공 멕(Meg)의 여행을 담은 판타지 소설입니다.
이 책의 말미에는 Discussion Questions이란 것이 있습니다. 독서토론회 같은 것이 있다면 그런 기회에 책을 읽고 자신의 생각을 나누는 과정을 통해 더욱 더 책의 내용을 잘 이해할 수 있습니다. 무엇을 배운다는 것은 질문을 받고 생각을 정리해서 답하는 과정에서 견고해지는 것입니다. 대부분의 책에는 이런 부분이 없습니다만 아이들의 책 중에는 일부러 이렇게 질문을 던지는 책이 있습니다. 질문을 읽으며 생각을 정리하게 됩니다. 다시 되돌아가서 찾아보게 됩니다. 안다는 것은 질문하는 것이고 답하는 것입니다.
어른들도 아이들도 책을 읽지 않는다고 합니다. 작은 습관이 독서를 재미있게 만들어 주는 것은 아닐까요. 처음부터 너무 거창하게 두껍고 글자가 많은 책을 찾기 보다는 관심이 있고 부담 없이 빠져들 수 있는 책이면 좋겠습니다. 중고등학교 시절이 바쁘다고 하지만 아이들의 모습을 보면 충분히 책을 읽을 시간이 있습니다. 다만 관심과 습관의 문제입니다. 시간의 문제는 전혀 아닙니다.

5. Many graphic novels represent three dimensions on a piece of paper-but this one had to represent two, three, and more dimensions when the children traveled via tesseract. What did you think of the illustrations of these har-to imagine concepts?
6. Meg tells IT, "Like and equal are not the same thing at all? Do you agree? How do the ideas of "like" and "equal" differ?
7. Meg, Charles Wallace, and Calvin venture thousands of light-years from home to find Mr.Murry, and Meg returns to Camazotz alone to save Charles Wallace. How far would you go to save a family member? What if you weren't sure you would succeed?
8. The Dark Thing is evil. Mrs Which tells the children that some of the best fighters of evil have come from earth. They list great people throughout history: Jesus, da Vinci, Shakespeare, and more. Who would you add to their list? What makes you choose them?
9. Meg's advantage against IT is that she has love and IT does not. What types of love do you see in the novel? What strengths is Meg able to draw from loving and being loved?
